Kateryna Ivonina (b. 1976, Minsk, Belarus) is a Ukrainian-American contemporary visual artist living and working in the Atlanta metropolitan area, USA.
After receiving her early artistic education in Minsk, she moved with her family to Kharkiv, Ukraine, in 1991. She studied the restoration of decorative architectural ornament and stucco at Higher Vocational School No. 20 and later earned a degree in Architectural Environment Design from Kharkiv National University of Construction and Architecture.
For more than two decades, Ivonina worked in architecture and interior design. In 2002, she became a partner at the design studio Bondarenko Group, contributing to numerous residential and public interior projects, several of which received awards in Ukrainian professional competitions.
In 2013, she established an active painting practice alongside her work in architecture and design. Her work has since been presented in solo and group exhibitions across Ukraine, Slovakia, Slovenia, Austria, the United Kingdom, and the United States. She is a member of the Union of Designers of Ukraine and the European Association of Artists ARTE.
Ivonina’s broader creative background includes acting training and workshops, episodic film roles, dance, music, and vocal performance. In 2023–2024, she developed and taught separate visual art and acting programs at the Ukrainian School of Atlanta. She also performs as a singer at charitable concerts. These experiences contribute to her interest in the body, movement, voice, rhythm, and performance as forms of artistic expression.
Working in painting and mixed media, Ivonina explores the relationships among perception, memory, natural forms, and cultural symbols. A central focus of her practice is anthropomorphic perception—the human tendency to recognize emotions, identities, and narratives in natural forms and objects. Moving between abstraction and figuration, she investigates how meaning emerges through observation, projection, symbolism, and cultural memory.
Since relocating to the United States in 2021, Ivonina has focused her professional practice primarily on visual art. She is currently developing long-term bodies of work that examine perception, identity, cultural heritage, and the transformation of traditional symbols within a contemporary context. Drawing on her experience in visual art, architecture, design, and embodied creative practices, her current research considers how the language of painting and mixed media can extend into spatial, installation-based, and performative forms incorporating material, movement, sound, and bodily presence.
