I’m a college teacher and Japanese/English interpreter began painting using my daughter’s iPad in 2020. Since my classes went on-line during the pandemic, I’ve decided to learn something new and creative in my free time. Painting brings me peace and offers me a place to meditate on the beauty in the grace I feel while living in it. I live in Kobe, Japan with my husband, a son, and a daughter. Now, I have my own iPad and I carry it around everywhere to my college, on my business trips, or to my daughters friend’s birthday parties. This device allows me to challenge and explore to use oil, water color, acrylic, spray, charcoal, or Sumi ink all on one canvas. One of my hobby is to collect Noh Japanese Theatrical Masks. I’ve been creating artworks inspired by these Noh Masks for last two years.
Noh masks are made to be rather “expressionless” to give actors room to show different emotions depending on angles or lines. For this series of artworks, I’ve tried to portray a contrast between expressionless, silent masks & ultra-decor, loud speaking backgrounds. The traditional/original Japanese pictorial motifs include cherry blossoms, plum blossoms, chrysanthemums, peonies, daisies, bell flowers, dahlias, jujubes, pine trees, bamboo leaves, hemp leaves, river streams, ocean waves, cranes, clouds, and Mt. Fuji.
