Hazuki Katagai is a Japanese artist, currently based in Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan. Many of her works are wearable, functional devices, serving each of them some specific purposes. She studied in Musashino Art university in Tokyo, MA honors degree in Scenography, Display & Fashion Design in 2010. The university granted her the Mitsubayashi-Ryotaro scholarship to support her studying in a master course in scenography design. As a stage costume designer, she had chances to grow research skill abroad, traveling to India and Romania supported by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. Her studies in scenography and fashion design sparked a deep interest towards “wearable devices”. After graduated on, she had worked at Nintendo Co., Ltd as a game planner until 2014 in the Developing Game Software Team. She developed several games that were awarded in 2013 the Game of The Year Division Grand Award in Japan Game Awards. Her interests were beyond game planning, as she was fascinated by the “communication” between people through the experience of making games. She felt a strong passion for art that pushed her to decide to start her artistic career in 2015. She is currently making Installations, artistic devices, new media arts, and conceptual arts. She is fascinated to make wearable artistic devices. There are two main reasons. Firstly, she considers devices as means to actively intervene in the world. They strengthen and assist our body's ability (= function of the body, perception of emotions); we can do and feel more than we normally can with just our own body. Therefore, we can get stronger connections with the world. Secondly, she would like to solve problems of the real world by making a change in the way of thinking of the people based on the power of imagination. Therefore, she is making her devices to propose another view points as a means for solving problems.
She think the body is the first place where “I” form a relationship with others, and an area through which “I” encounter various situations of the world. She is making her works for finding out "what the world is" and "what we are" by using the capacity of expression of devices. She believes her works connect people through shared experiences that are possible thanks to the fact that people can really use them. The reason why she is making her works is to facilitate communication, mutual-understanding, and to present new values to the society.
Her unique creativity has allowed her to rapidly expand her activity, participating in a lot of exhibitions and winning awards. Her artworks got a high reputation as she was awarded "The 19th Japan Media Arts Festival Jury Selections” in Japan (2015), "Tokyo Wonder Wall Award” (2015) and "The Juries Prize of Tokyo Wonder Wall” in Japan (2015). In the pursuit of expanding her activity around the world, she became one of the finalist in the "International Talent Support 2016" in Italy, that granted her a 4 months residency program at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai (2017) . She has been teaching in Joshibi art university in Tokyo as a part time lecturer, and in the Musashino art university in Tokyo as a special lecturer since 2016. At the same time, she makes her works and tries to expand her activities in the world.
