Born in Essen, Germany, I grew up in nearby Krefeld, a city of about 250,000 near Duesseldorf. I began exhibiting creative work in the late 1970’s deeply influenced at the time by the Fluxus movement and its local, but internationally renown protagonist, Josef Beuys. A few years later, I had an opportunity to move to San Francisco, California, which became home for more than thirty years. Eight years ago, my wife Suzanne and I moved to Honolulu, Hawaii.
Trained in analytic philosophy (MBA San Francisco State University, PhD University of Melbourne, Australia), my creative work in photography and digital media gravitates towards the investigation of philosophical themes and problems.
The images presented here are part of a series of long exposure photographs of Honolulu, Hawaii. The tension that is created by the combination of a street photographer’s approach with the use of long exposure settings gives the images a striking appearance that is engaging and captivating.
The contradiction between long exposure times that usually require a stationary camera on a tripod on the one hand, and the much more covert and mobile hunter of the decisive moment approach of street photography with its emphasis on small cameras and relatively fast shutter speeds on the other hand, generates a creative conduit for engaging images that invite visual exploration and philosophical reflection alike.
