Alice is an award nominated mixed media artist who takes photographs around the world and repaints them into contemporary, limited edition, fine art images. She began her career in advertising as a conceptual copywriter and graphic designer, moving client-side to position global brands and direct their international marketing/communications strategies. 8 years ago she returned to her creative roots.
The concept of "seeing" is at the heart of her practice. Combining photography with painting, Alice invites the viewer to replace the window through which they see the world, with a lens that interprets visual experience into something that is at once familiar and foreign. Inspired by the natural world, landscapes, seascapes, nature, and wildlife dominate her portfolio, ranging in style from bold saturated abstracts to soft, textured tones.
The process starts with a photograph, which is treated like a canvas. Images are repainted by hand digitally with a "brush", sometimes in layers, sometimes pixel by pixel. Of her creative approach Alice says, "My work is not about digital manipulation or software, but about my ability to transform the canvas into a re-imagined world.”
In addition to solo exhibitions in London and Nice, France, Alice's work has been exhibited at the Embassy of Iceland in London and auctioned at Christie's London. She also has delivered commissions for private collectors, galleries and art consultants in the UK, US and Canada.
An untrained artist, her contemporary, fine art images appear on book covers, and are held in private collections in the UK, Canada, the US, Germany, Switzerland and Israel. Alice holds degrees in English literature, Education and Business.
Alice is represented by a number of UK based galleries, and Bridgeman Images internationally. She has exhibited at Parallax Art Fair and Roy's People Art Fair, and regularly shows work in Blackheath Arts Society exhibitions in London.
Recognition includes: Featured Artist, LensCulture Art Photography Awards, Gemini Art Prize Featured Artist, Tagsmart Artist of the Week, Secret Art Prize (long listed), Top 10 Artworks CultureLabel, Bridgeman Images Studio Award (short listed), Aesthetica Art Prize (long listed) , Terry O'Neill Tag Photography Award (2 series nominated), Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto (winner, national design competition)
In addition to her practice, Ms. Gur-Arie is completing an art book containing a selection of her short stories and poems, and a large number of her landscape and wildlife images.
Ms Gur-Arie is a Trustee of Positive View Foundation, a UK based charity that uses photography to transform the lives of disadvantaged 16-25 year olds living on inner London estates.
