My name is Melanie Geyer, I am 22 years old and grew up on a small farm in Austria. I spent my wonderful, secure childhood with my mom and dad, my grandparents, my sister, brother and lots of animals at the farm which was built on a calm hill. One could not overlook the fact that the little creative and cheeky girl from Bromberg, Lower Austria was a little different and saw the world on an other perspective than the other kids.At the age of 15 I canceled my scheduled education at a rural ecomomic school. I felt that I had to do something else, something more creative and fullfilling instead of cooking „Schnitzel and Salat“ at school all day. So I left my „save haven“ at the age of 16 and went to a for me absolutely unfamiliar city: Graz, where I got the great chance to attend a high qualified artschool (mainfocus on graphic-design). The school is called „Ortweinschule“. After five exciting and challenging years I graduated 2017 with the „Matura“. Althought it was hard, to lets say, „break up“ with my childhood, leave my lovely familiy and friends, to leave home at only 16 it was possibly the best desicion in my life. I learned to know myself, was finally able to get independent, had the chance to think out loud many thoughts and was able to become who I am without being the crazy kid from the small town.Since october 2017 I work as a graphic designer in a company called bit-schulungscenter. There I am responsible for the design and layout of books who help migrants to learn german and the values of austria as good and quick as possible. Next to my art-specific education and job, I always had an inner urge to help children, play and make them laugh. Thats something like a passion to me and I’ve hated the fact since I can remember, that not every child gets that kind of carefree childhood I was able to enjoy. So one day I decided that I wanted to help the children from „SOS Kinderdorf“ an organization that cares for children who can not live with their parents at their own homes anymore because of violence or other reasons. Beside the mandatory interships in the field of graphic design, i spent most of my freetime, during my education in Graz, in the SOS Kinderdorf in Hinterbrühl. I’m writing the following lines not because it is important in my biography but because it shaped the kind of art i am doing and the main content in my artworks in a special way. The children who live there have a high weight to carry. They had to experience things that nobody wants to go throw.I want the world to become attentive to the fates of those children. I want people to talk about things that are not allowed to be talken about. Generelly, I want to show pictures everyone is afraid to see. And I want people to look even if it makes them feel unwell. I hope that one day my biography says that I helped lots of children by doing art, and, despite the fact that some things cannot be changed, by helping those people to be seen.
