Kaimurai is the identity through which visual artist Abishek G J expresses his love for natural indigo and the endless possibilities it holds. Having worked as a Designer for fifteen years, he now devotes his time to his art and research, carefully seeking out the threads that connect us all but rarely reveal themselves. Drawing upon inspirations like biomimicry, geomorphology and the Western Ghats of India, his work is a commentary on the fallout of our aimless growth and greed on various ecosystems, and the urgent need for introspection and a more mindful existence. Kaimurai’s other major influences include Carnatic music and ancient South Indian arts and architecture.
I want the person viewing the art to
experience a sense of beauty which could arise from mystery or a sense of being
lost, pensive, caught up in the movement taking place in the artwork. The materials I use to create this expression are predominantly natural and have come through with its own struggle and stubbornness, like Indigo.
My work is formed not just by my painting
techniques but by the way you see the work. I am just a catalyst.”
*** The Indigo used is natural Indigo pigment and the base used is handmade paper hence speckles/impurities would be visible which is part of the nature of the materials which i try not disturb.
