Myriam Gämperli’s work builds upon a surrealist tradition of arrangement. The tongue-in-cheek mixture of the recognisable and the unfamiliar creates a charm that characterizes her productions. Gämperli creates a space in which hierarchies are questioned, gravity is defied and bodies are freed of their boundaries.
She usually stages herself - as a hybrid being or some mixed form between object and subject. Sculptural performances allow her to adopt multiple identities, which fan out along the axes of nature, gender and notions of beauty. The theatre-like sequences are inspired by the artist's everyday life, which unfolds between the urban area of Zürich and the rural nature in Bettenau SG.
Contrasting elements are consistently evident on Gämperli's collages, paintings, installations, performances and dances. They reflect autobiographical topics: after growing up in a hamlet of 75 inhabitants, the artist later lived in cities such as London, Berlin and Zürich. The different experiences with subcultures and marginalized groups on the crossroads between art and tradition influence her to this day.
