Agnes Draviczky (1980, Budapest)
Once my father gave me a good advice: “Never put your name on the bottom of an empty paper. Write your own story before you sign.” From the moment I decided to study art. Ever since painting has become the energy that moves my life. My creativity is not much driven to any other media.
I was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1980. Currently, I am living and working in Oslo, Norway where I moved in 2013. I hold master degrees as a Painter and Teacher of Art History and Drawing from The Hungarian University of Fine Arts.
Being fascinated by the way how colors and shapes are carrying the meaning I spent more than ten years with discovering abstraction starting with decomposing the prospect and ending up expressing abstract ideas. While recognizing the layers of expression through abstraction, I put a big emphasis also on testing different techniques and tools to create a distinctive texture as an additional element of representation for the paintings.
I was always seeking for the opportunity to work on different fields and traveling which provided me the opportunity to experience many aspects of life, to meet people with different backgrounds, culture, and meanings of life. My working life became part of the learning process that gives me a constant wave of diverse inspirations. In the abstract period, I adapted these inspirations to an overall experience that grows from the mixture of influences I sensed: the breakdown of harmony in life and the cycle of seeking to achieve it. As for my meaning abstraction conveys and integrates these to the widest spectrum and discovering it is a discipline that takes a lifetime to fully grasp.
However, at a certain point in my life, I felt the necessity to gain new experience in art. Moving to another country in 2013, leaving my well-known life behind gave me much more interest in a specific theme which is the connection between people. I am observing the characteristics which hail from the beauty, success, or failure of the conflict of interactions between people regardless of what brings their motivations alive. The history, the cultural background, and deeds of the characters on the pictures are unknown. The situations are captured moments which reveal the quality of the relationship. Influenced by my abstract background, I am not aiming at showing realistic pictures of recognizable persons either showing their everyday environment. My goal is to create timeless symbols of humans and their meetings, when - at the moment of their own - they have only one in the billion to share their identity, sensibility, fears, and the way they carry themselves.
I took part in various exhibitions in my home country where many of my paintings can be found in private collections. I also had the opportunity to have solo and joint exhibitions in Athens and Oslo, where I also have a permanent display in the building of Telenor Center since 2016.
Artist Statement
Painting means forming the spirit and the belief in images. When a picture is completed, it's no longer my personal impression. It becomes an independent reality that is about the contact that occurs between the artwork and the spectator.
This comes alive through the energy that hails from the tension between shapes and colors; this energy is the bearer of global values. My task is to reveal and visualize it.
