Soukaina Chadli, born in 1998 in Morocco, is a visual artist and fashion designer working in Paris.
A 2023 graduate of the Master of Fine Arts with a specialization in the Practices, histories and theories of photography at University of Paris 8 - Vincennes - Saint-Denis, she explores the relationship between image, body and clothing.
It is through the medium of photography that she has resolved to explore the subjects that question her, which is in itself a pretext, she believes, for looking, lingering and stopping at things, so much so that one might think that the photographic medium represents for her an extension of her curiosity.
The question she raises in her photographic work is closely linked to her previous experience as a fashion designer, and represents a fundamental aspect of her artistic exploration.
Indeed, while her earlier studies as a fashion designer enabled her to explore the various freedoms offered by garment design, she was soon confronted with unexpected limitations and constraints during her first professional experiences.
These restrictions prompted her to undertake research into the constraints imposed on the body by clothing and the various possible implications, be they aesthetic, social or physical.
Her aim is not to reduce clothing to its multiple constraints, but to think about and grasp the complexity of the object and its relationship to the body - the physical body, but also the gendered, societal, cultural, political and even economic body.
Her work is based on a photographic approach in which she undertakes three distinct roles: that of the operator, that of the model and that of the creator of the garment worn. This triangle, generated by these three roles, has enabled her to delve into the relationship between body, garment and image, and to explore the possibilities offered by this interaction.
