Carolina Falkholt (born 1977) Falkholt a Swedish artist known both in Sweden and internationally for her characteristic and monumental wall paintings. She has since the 1990´s developed her art form of graffiti by incorporating sound and performative aspects, as well as combining painting, drawing, sculpture, textile, photography, installation, text and video in her art practice. Her work challenges old ideas of gender stereotypes and the use of the female body. Her recent acclaimed solo exhibition at Galleri Thomassen in Gothenburg Sweden, titled Din Jävla Hora (You Devil Whore) was a self-biographic vindication and universal story about oppression and liberation. Falkholts work takes us on a journey through her own personal universe. A world that brings up urgent questions, calls for action and offers comfort.
Her in situ process is furious and exact. The paintings are often built up with sweeping or running swashes of color and on top of that her significant line drawings ranging from feather-like amorphous structures, to sometimes almost naturalistic motifs, meticulously built up of small circles. The motifs have semiotic elements of body-like characters such as eyes, vaginas or hand gestures with elements of hand alphabet and sign language. Through her choice of subjects and her outspokenness, she has also gained a reputation as a controversial and deeply committed artist. Her work has been included in multiple museum exhibitions, most recently at Gothenburg Museum of Art, Artipelag and Eskilstuna Art Museum. Her installation Train of Thoughts is part of the permanent collection at Wanås Konst. She is the recipient of numerous residencies and grants, most recently the IASPIS one year residency at the ISCP in New York. Her work is represented in both private and public collections.
