Born in 1953 in
Casablanca, of a Romanian father and a Moroccan mother, I started painting
professionally in 2018. Before becoming a full time artist I’ve worked as an
ophthalmologist: after having spent my life restoring sight to people, it
became urgent for me to also offer them a vision. In fact, my creative practice
translates the reality of life by showing what lays behind the surface. My paintings depict life in the making and catch the potential energy
that exists in the grey area between visible and invisible, tangible and
intangible. That energy is what drives our lives as individuals and as a part
of society. After my first success at the contemporary Art Fairs ''Art en Capital’'
in Paris in 2012, I decided to seek
inspiration elsewhere. I travelled across Asia and Africa meeting new people
and getting to know different cultures. These encounters would later inspire my
works about freedom, war, inequalities…
Relationships are one
of the themes at the core of my research therefore I try to replicate the
connections that people have with each other by inspiring relationships between
the viewer and the painting itself. These relationships often come in form of
questions as I try to engage the audience and inspire reflections. In 2021 I
participated in different digital exhibitions such as “2020 Manchester viewing
room” and “Romantica” digital exhibition at MADS Gallery, Milan where I
showcased the paintings Peaceful thoughts, Reflections in the night
and We’re gonna get out of this.
In my paintings I
inscribe different layers of meaning and multiple perspectives that the viewer
can read accordingly with their specific state of mind: ranging from a dark,
pessimistic point of view to a brighter and optimistic way of thinking. To
convey my message I explore both abstraction and figuration and I use
unconventional materials such as crosslinked polyethylene tube or glued pleated
canvas. My large-scale paintings become often collages and the materials I use
help me in creating a sense of estrangement that triggers a reflection in the
viewer, possibly the same reflection that inspired me in making the artwork.
Patterns, textures and tridimensional elements create a dynamic surface on the
canvas that results in an eye-catching optical energy. Through my body of work I propose my vision
on existential and social themes and I deliver a sense of intimacy that deeply
connects me and my art with the audience.
